Songs I Probably Shouldn’t Listen To #32

Song: Heart of Glass / Once I Had A Love (Download / Download)
Artist: Blondie
Album: Parallel Lines

Key Lyric:

Once I had a love and it was divine
Soon found out I was losing my mind
It seemed like the real thing but I was so blind
Mucho mistrust
Love’s gone behind

Commentary:

While we’re in the realm of songs from the 70’s, might as well revisit this gem from Blondie. I was surprised to find out that there were two versions of this song.

The song was originally released as “Once I Had A Love” in 1975 and had a drastically different sound then the song it would go onto become, “Heart of Glass”. Fans cried sellout when they heard “Heart of Glass” had adopted a disco radio friendly feel to it, but I tend to like both versions of the song. For all it’s worth, I think “Heart of Glass” is a bizarre song due to it’s shifting disco dancefloor beat, and it’s lyrics with such terms as “Mucho mistrust”.

Note to self: Never try to sing this at karaoke again. No matter how drunk you are, you will not be able to pull off those falsetto high notes. Seriously.

Bonus:

“Once I Had A Love” by Blondie. This is the original version of the song that was released in 1975, and had much more of a sultry bluesy rendition.
