Songs I Probably Shouldn’t Listen To #21

Song: I Know It’s Over
Artist: The Smiths
AlbumThe Queen Is Dead

Key Lyric:

And I know it’s over
still I cling
I don’t know where else I can go
it’s over, it’s over, it’s over

Commentary:

One of my friends asked me why the hell haven’t I posted a Smiths or Morrissey song yet. I told him it was on the list (trust me, I have a long list) and I would soon get to it, but I guess I just bumped it up a few notches.

This downtrodden song by The Smiths is absolutely dejecting. Morrissey keeps the details a bit vague, especially the part when he sings “I know it’s over and it never really began but in my heart it was so real.” Perhaps an imaginary relationship? Also, in typical Morrissey melodrama, he even suggests hes better off dead as he croons “Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head.”

Still the rest of the song is pretty damned heart breaking, and when he sings “If your so funny/clever/entertaining/good looking, then why are you on your own tonight?”, I can’t help but wonder if I should pose the question to myself each and every night of my life.
